Question

What are the important functions of lungs and kidneys?

Solution

Kidneys:
The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs in the renal system. They help the body pass waste as urine. They also help filter blood before sending it back to the heart.

The kidneys perform many crucial functions, including:

  • maintaining overall fluid balance
  • regulating and filtering minerals from blood
  • filtering waste materials from food, medications, and toxic substances
  • creating hormones that help produce red blood cells, promote bone health, and regulate blood pressure
Lungs:

The lungs provide an interface between the atmosphere and the blood stream. Oxygen passes from the lungs into the blood. Oxygen, of course, is used for aerobic metabolism in the body. One of the end products of metabolism is carbon dioxide, which passes from the blood stream into the lungs, then is exhaled into the atmosphere.

The lungs also help to control metabolism through regulating pH. Carbon dioxide creates a more acidic pH, so ‘blowing off’ CO2 makes the pH more alkaline. People with chronic respiratory disease may become chronically ‘acidic.’

The blood vessels within the lungs filter blood clots from the body, and prevent them from reaching the systemic circulation, which could potentially deliver these blood clots to the brain or heart, among other organs.

The lungs produce angiotensin, which is part of blood pressure regulation, along with the kidneys.

The lungs also allow you to yell at the TV when you listen to Donald Trump speak.

I would guess those are some of the important functions of the lungs
