Ingredients of cosmetics:

The quality that sets human beings apart from other animals is to present themselves in a well-groomed fashion.

  • This is where cosmetics come in and help human beings to take care of themselves and present their most confident self in front of the world. We use some cosmetics daily and some of them are used occasionally but it is a part of everyone's life in some way.
  • They enhance our beauty and significantly affects the way human being feels about themselves.
  • Cosmetics is a billion-dollar industry in itself and growing by the day.
  • Some commonly used cosmetics are face powders, lipsticks, nail paints, perfumes, shampoos, creams, etc.

Ingredients that are used in cosmetics are described below:

(1) Thickeners: These are the substances that are added to various skincare products to enhance their stability and convenience to use.

  • Natural thickeners: Derived from natural sources like plants. Examples: Stearic acid, carnauba wax, gum
  • Mineral thickeners: Derived from the minerals. Example: Silica gel, Magnesium aluminium silicate

(2) Moisturisers: The chemical substances which help to retain moisture when applied to the skin.

  • Moisturisers are used as a skincare product to prevent the loss of water and maintain the moisture level in the skin.
  • They create a thin layer on the skin that prevents the loss of water from it.
  • Examples: Petroleum jelly, glycerol, beeswax.

(3) Glimmers: These are the tiny glitter particles that are added to certain products to reflect light which creates a sparkling effect.

  • One of the most widely used glimmers is a combination of Titanium dioxide with mica particles.

(4) Sunscreens: The creams that protect us from harmful sun rays.

  • Rays of the sun contain ultraviolet rays (UV-rays) which damage the skin.
  • Sunscreens are creams that are applied to the skin.
  • They contain Titanium dioxide (TiO2) which blocks the UV-rays by absorbing them and protecting us from their harmful effects.

(5) Kajal: Kajal is the most common cosmetic item to beautify the eyes.

  • It is a black velvety powder, a form of Carbon (C) called lampblack, and used by mixing it with clarified butter.

(6) Foaming products: These generally use a chemical called Sodium lauryl sulphate which is responsible for the cleansing action of products like face wash, shampoos, shower gels, etc.

(7) Talcum: Talcum consists of fine particles of Magnesium carbonate (MgCO3) and Zinc oxide (ZnO) along with any fragrance.
