Cells

  1. It contains living cells of varying types.

Matrix

  1. The main bulk of the connective tissue is a homogenous, gel-like intercellular substance called matrix.

Cells of connective tissue

  1. Fibroblasts secrete fibers and matrix-forming ground substances.
  2. Mast cells secrete matrix, anticoagulant heparin, histamine, and serotonin, which promote inflammation of the infected area.
  3. Plasma cells secrete antibodies and act as a defense cells of the body.
  4. Macrophages destroy and remove the invading bacteria, foreign bodies, and damaged cells from tissues and help in protecting the body and providing immunity.
  5. Immunocytes produce antibodies for the immune response.
