Features of canal irrigation:
It is one of the oldest means of irrigation.
In canal irrigation Uttar Pradesh stands first followed by Punjab and Haryana.
Canals covers irrigation of 27.5% of the total irrigation.
Canals are classified as inundation canals and perennial canals.
Inundation canals: these are fed by rivers when they overflow due to floods.
Perennial canals: these have water through out the year. Usually fed by rivers and reservoirs.
