Solution

Leaf:

  1. The flattened, green, and blade-like structure in a plant is referred to as the leaf.
  2. Leaf arises from the node of a stem and is attached to the stem with a stalk known as a petiole.

Functions of leaves:

  1. Leaves are considered to be the main organs of photosynthesis and transpiration in most plants.
  2. Food is prepared by leaves by performing photosynthesis.
  3. Photosynthesis is the process by which plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to create oxygen and food in the form of glucose
  4. Gaseous exchange occurs in the leaves through tiny pores present on the surface of the leaves called stomata.
  5. During the day, these pores allow the entry of carbon dioxide and help in the exhalation of oxygen as an end product of photosynthesis.
  6. The overall reaction that takes place in photosynthesis : 6CO2+6H2OlightC6H12O6+6O3
  7. Transpiration is the process of evaporation of water from the aerial parts of the plants through the stomatal pores.
  8. Water is lost in the form of water vapor through the stomata which are present on the surface of leaves and green stems.
  9. Leaves are often modified into specialized structures such as spines and tendrils for protecting the plants, providing support to weak stems, and storing food.
