The major challenges for the proper working of democracy in India are:
(i) Growing economic and social inequalities among the people: The social spectrum has a huge difference between rich and poor and it is growing with time.
(ii) Role of anti-social elements: Crime is rampant in India. Anti-social elements hamper the voting process of free and fair elections.
(iii) Corruption and inefficiency: There is widespread corruption in the system due to the inefficiency of government staff.
(iv) Casteism and communalism: The society of India has not shed the caste-ridden mindset and people vote on the basis of caste and community.
(v) Poverty and Population: The huge population poses tremendous administrative challenges and government assigned benefits for the poor hardly reach them.
