Let X be the oxidation state of Fe in $F e_{3} O_{4}$ .

$3 X + 4 (- 2) = 0$

$X = + \frac{8}{3}$

Hence, the oxidation state of Fe in $F e_{3} O_{4}$ is +8/3.

But, the oxidation number cannot be fractional.

$F e_{3} O_{4}$ exists as mixture of $F e O$ and $F e_{2} O_{3}$ , in which Fe has oxidation number of $+ 2$ and $+ 3$ respectively.
