Solution

Planes used in medicine and anatomy:

  1. Planes are two-dimensional imaginary surfaces that run through the body.
  2. In medicine and anatomy, three such planes are commonly used, as listed below:
    1. Frontal plane: A plane that divides an organ or body into an anterior and a posterior part. This plane is commonly referred to as the coronal plane.
    2. Sagittal plane: A plane that divides an organ or body vertically into the left and right sides. The median plane, also known as the midsagittal plane, is formed when the vertical plane descends directly to the centre of the body. A parasagittal plane or a longitudinal section is formed when this divides the body into unequal left and right sides.
    3. Transverse plane: Divides an organ or body horizontally into lower and upper halves These planes generate images known as cross-sections.
