Question

What are the properties of viscosity?

Open in App
Solution

Viscosity:

The measure of a fluid's resistance to gradual deformation by shear or tensile stress is known as viscosity.

Types of viscosity:

There are two types of measuring fluid's viscosity:

  1. Dynamic Viscosity: Dynamic viscosity is expressed as the ratio of shear stress to shear strain. Its unit is pascal second (Pa.s) or kgm-1s-1.
  2. Kinematic Viscosity: Kinematic viscosity is expressed as the ratio of dynamic fluid viscosity to its density. Its unit is a square meter per second or m2s-1.

Properties of viscosity:

  1. Viscosity is determined by the structural properties of the molecules.
  2. Raising the temperature reduces the viscosity of the solution or fluid.
  3. Viscosity would be a measurement of how components travel across one another.
  4. It is determined by the attraction between the molecules.
