What are the reasons for using Mercury as a Barometric Liquid, explain each of the points.

Mercury is the most ideal liquid for the barometer due to the following three reasons:

1) It is the heaviest liquid. Therefore it rises to a height of only 76 cm to balance the atmospheric pressure.

2) It gives more accurate reading as it does not stick to the glass.

3) It is opaque and shiny and hence can be seen easily through glass.
