The Indian Constitution serves several purposes.
1. It provides the basic law of the country according to which it is governed.
2. It establishes the fundamental principles of democracy, freedom and equality of all citizens according to which India is to be governed.
3. It establishes the separation of power between the legislature, the executive and the judiciary.
4. It establishes parliamentary democracy in India and guarantees the independence of the judiciary.
5. It establishes separation of powers between the central and state governments.
