Question

Does plasmid contain antibiotic resistance?

Open in App
Solution

Antibiotic resistance:

  1. When any organism develops an ability to defeat the antibiotic drugs designed to kill them, it is known as antibiotic resistance.
  2. As antibiotic resistance is developed, the organism is not killed and continues to grow.

Plasmid:

  1. A small, circular, double-stranded DNA that is different from the chromosomal DNA of the cell is known as a plasmid.
  2. It is an extrachromosomal DNA present in the cell and can replicate independently.
  3. The plasmid is naturally found in bacteria.

Plasmid and its antibiotic resistance:

  1. Antibiotic resistance genes provide antibiotic resistance to the host.
  2. The plasmid contains antibiotic resistance genes.

Hence, plasmids do contain antibiotic resistance.
