In 1952, an extensive Family planning programme was started by the Government of India. It wanted to promote planned and responsible parenthood. The culmination of years of planned efforts was the National Population Policy (NPP) 2000.

National Population Policy (NPP) 2000 focused on providing a framework for policies on

  • Making family welfare a people-centered program.
  • Achieving universal immunization of children.
  • Giving compulsory and free school education for children up to the age of 14 years.
  • Promoting delayed marriage for girls, achieving universal immunization of children against all vaccine-preventable diseases.
  • NPP 2000 focused on nutritional requirements.
  • NPP wanted to give greater attention to one of the important sections of the population i.e. adolescents.
  • More emphasis on preventing sexually transmitted diseases (STD), and unwanted pregnancies.
  • It also focused on bolstering the prevention of child marriage legally.
  • Reducing infant mortality rate to below 30 per 1000 live births.
