  • Water is one of the main and the most essential substances for the existence of life.
  • It is known as the source of life as no living being could survive without water.

There are three main sources of water that are given below:

Rainwater:

  • It is the primary source of water.
  • It is because of rain that all water bodies maintain their water levels.
  • Rainwater is formed by the evaporation of water from the earth's surface, followed by condensation.
  • It contains impurities such as dissolved gases and dust particles.

Surface water:

  • It comprises of all the water bodies such as oceans, lakes, seas, rivers present on the surface of earth.
  • Water in oceans and seas is impure and salty.
  • The process of removal of salt from seawater is called desalination.

Groundwater:

  • A part of rainwater which percolates down through the rocky layer and gets collected underground is called groundwater.
  • It is drawn up through wells, tube wells, and bore wells.
  • It contains soluble impurities.
  • Groundwater supplements the demand for water during summer.
