  1. Mature bone cells (or osteocytes) are located in spaces called the lacunae.
  2. Lacunae are small chambers present in the calcified bone matrix.
  3. Lacunae are present in the tissues of bones and cartilages.
  4. In cartilages, the lacuna stores chondrocytes (cells of the cartilage).
  5. Lacunae provide space for cells to hold cells and help them to function and stay alive.
