What are the strongest acids and bases?

Open in App
Solution

Strong acids:

  1. The acids which completely dissociates into its respective ions when dissolved in water are known as a strong acid.
  2. The dissociation of strong acid in water is shown below.
    HA(aq)+H2O(l)H3O+(aq)+A-(aq)
  3. An acid's strength is determined by the amount of hydrogen ion produced by the reaction.
  4. A few examples of strong acids are Hydrochloric acid, Nitric acid, Sulfuric acid etc.

Strong base:

  1. The base which completely dissociates into its respective ions when dissolved in water is known as a strong base.
  2. The dissociation of a strong base in water is shown below.
    BOH(aq)+H2O(l)B+(aq)+OH-(aq)
  3. The strength of the base is based on the OH- ions produced from the reaction.
  4. An example of strong bases is Sodium hydroxide, Potassium hydroxide, Lithium hydroxide etc.
