TSH: Thyroid Stimulating Hormone

  1. TSH is a pituitary hormone that stimulates the release of thyroxine from the thyroid gland which is a very important gland.
  2. It controls the metabolism as well as various aspects related to the basal metabolic rate.
  3. The normal range is 0.5 to 5.0 mIU/l.
  4. Thyroid hormone imbalance causes hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.

The following are the symptoms of high TSH:

  1. Weight gain: the high TSH causes hypothyroidism in which the thyroid hormone released is very less eventually making the person gain weight.
  2. Irregular periods: period cycle is mainly dependent on the hormones such as estrogen which is controlled by TSH. Its high accumulation disturbs the menstrual cycle.
  3. Fatigue: weight gain and less energy will be observed in cases of high TSH, leading to a feeling of fatigue.
