Solution

Stomach acid:

  1. It is also known as gastric juice and is essential for digestion.
  2. Parietal cells which line the stomach produce HCl or hydrochloric acid.
  3. This acid complex breaks down food materials into simpler molecules.
  4. It also protects the chyme from bacterial action.

Overproduction of acid in the stomach gives rise to the following problems:

  1. Abdominal discomfort: Abdominal pain that occurs in the chest and pelvic regions. It is characterized by crampy, achy, dull, intermittent, or sharp contractions.
  2. Nausea or vomiting: Excessive acid may lead to nausea and acid reflux that triggers the area postrema or vomiting centers of the brain and cause the person to vomit.
  3. Bloating: Excessive acid distends the stomach walls and leads to gas formation or bloating.
  4. Heartburn: The excessive acid caused a burning sensation in the chest and leads to extensive pain and discomfort.
  5. Decreased appetite: The acid fills up the stomach and hence a feeling of fullness persists. This decreases the appetite of the individual.
  6. Halitosis: Halitosis or bad breath occurs due to the recurrent hiccups of the acid that bubbles and escapes through the mouth.
