The 4 main factors that affect the size of a wave are:

  1. Wind blowing duration: The duration of the wind, often known as wind speed, is the second factor. If the wind blowing duration will longer, the larger will be the waves.
  2. Fetch: The continuous stretch of the ocean over which the wind blows without changing its direction. Longer fetch results larger in size of the wave.
  3. The energy of the wave: The higher the energy of the wave larger the size of the wave.
  4. Wind speed: Winds give energy to the waves. The energy transfer from one wave crest to the next must be faster than the wind speed. If the speed of wind increases, there will be longer fetch and greater will be the wind blows, then the energy is converted to waves and the wave becomes larger in size. Also if the speed of wind will slow, then the wave becomes larger in size.
