Chlor-alkali process:

  1. It is used for manufacturing the sodium hydroxide (NaOH), chlorine gas Cl2, and hydrogen gasH2
  2. When we pass electricity through an aqueous solution of sodium chloride (NaCl, called brine) it decomposes to form sodium hydroxide(NaOH).

Reaction involved:

2NaCl(aq)+2H2O(l)Electrolysis2NaOH(aq)+Cl2(g)+H2(g)

Three products of the ‘Chlor-alkali process’;

  1. Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH)
  2. Chlorine gas Cl2
  3. Hydrogen gas H2

Commercial and Industrial uses:
1. NaOH- used for making detergent and soaps, paper making, and artificial fibers.
2. Cl2- used for making Bleaching powder, Pesticides, and CFCs.
3. H2- used for making Ammonia, and Fuels.
