Taxonomy:

  1. Taxonomy is the branch of biology that groups of organisms are based on studies of their different characteristics.
  2. Some characteristics are structure, behavior, development, genetic makeup (DNA), nutritional needs, and methods of obtaining food.
  3. Taxonomy categorizes organisms on the basis of similarity and dissimilarity.
  4. The principal ranks in taxonomy are domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus and species.

Types of Taxonomy: There are three types of taxonomy: Artificial system, Natural system and Phylogenetic system.

  1. Artificial system: It is based on observable characteristics. It is used for a limited purpose where speed and convenience are essential.
  2. Natural system: It is based on large number of characters. It increases the amount of available information.
  3. Phylogenetic system: It reflects possible evolutionary relationship based on ancestry and descent.
