What are the two basic laws of probability?

Open in App
Solution

The two basic laws of probability are as follows:

If A and B are two events defined on a sample space

  • Addition rule: When A and B are not mutually exclusive: PAorB=PA+PB-PAandB. Special case: When A and B are mutually exclusive, we get PAandB=0. Then, PAorB=PA+PB

  • Multiplication rule: When A and B are not independent: PAandB=PBPA|B. Special case: When A and B are independent, we get PA|B=PA. Then, PAandB=PAPB
