Solution

Biogeochemical cycles:

The pathways through which elements such as carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, and potassium move from the environment to living organisms and are returned to the environment are termed biogeochemical pathways.

Compartments of biogeochemical cycles :

For each biogeochemical cycle, there are two major components:

  1. Biotic component: The biotic component of a biogeochemical cycle is called the biosphere. It includes living components like plants, animals, and microorganisms. They are involved in the fixation of the inorganic gases of the atmosphere into usable organic forms.
  2. Abiotic component: The lithosphere (land), atmosphere (air), and hydrosphere (water) constitute the abiotic components of a biogeochemical cycle. these act as the mediums and reservoirs of the inorganic minerals where the minerals are returned after utilization by the organisms.
