Question

What are the two main types of gravimeters?

Open in App
Solution

  1. The gravimeter is a device that measures the gravitational field of the Earth at precise points.
  2. The device works on the premise of monitoring gravity's continual downward acceleration.
  3. There are two types of gravimeters: absolute and relative.
    3.1 Absolute gravimeters:
3.1.1 Gravimeters that measure local gravity in absolute units are known as absolute gravimeters (Gal).
3.1.2 Absolute gravimeters are small and portable (like the Autograv CG-5 model) and can be used in the field.
3.1.3 They work by measuring a mass's acceleration during free fall in a vacuum.
3.1.4 The ground is rigidly linked to an accelerometer.
    3.2 Relative gravimeters:
3.2.1 Relative gravimeters are spring-based sensors with a fixed mass that are exceedingly sensitive (m).
3.2.2 With a change in position, changes in gravity will result in a change in the weight of a fixed mass.
3.2.3 As a result, the length of the spring will vary significantly depending on the location.
3.2.4 The spring extension is precisely recorded using appropriate optical, mechanical, or electrical amplification.
3.2.5 At a base station where the absolute value of gravity is known, the gravimeter is calibrated at regular intervals.
3.2.6 The International Gravity Standardization Network is used to calculate absolute gravity values at survey stations.
