  2. The protein coat which surrounds the genetic material is called the capsid, which functions to protect the virus genome from nucleases.
  3. The capsid is made up of small subunits of proteins called capsomeres

Two major Viral capsids:

  1. Helical: The capsid of the virus is spiral-shaped.
  2. Icosahedral: The viral capsid is polygonal in shape.
