Question

What are the two processes in which carbon dioxide is fixed in the atmosphere?

Open in App
Solution

The process of utilizing inorganic carbon dioxide for the production of organic compounds is termed fixation.

Carbon dioxide can be fixed in the environment in the following two ways:

  1. Photosynthesis: Plants containing chlorophyll undergo photosynthesis by which they utilize atmospheric carbon dioxide and form glucose. This can be performed via the C3 cycle, C4 cycle or the CAM cycle.
  2. Usage by marine animals to form their shells: Marine organisms, mainly those belonging to Phylum Mollusca, utilize the carbon dioxide dissolved in the aquatic environment to form carbonates that are a major component of their shells.
