Cortical hormones are secreted by the adrenal cortex of the adrenal gland.
Thus, cortical hormones are also known as adrenocortical hormones.
The cortical hormone plays an important role in regulating many things such as reducing inflammation, regulating blood pressure, raising blood glucose levels, controls the sleep or wakeup cycle.
Two types of cortical hormones are Glucocorticoids and Mineralocorticoids :
Glucocorticoids:
Glucocorticoids control the metabolism of carbohydrates.
Glucocorticoids promote proteolysis, lipolysis, and gluconeogenesis.
Glucocorticoids participate in the reactions to stress.
Mineralocorticoids:
Mineralocorticoids regulate water balance in the body.
Mineralocorticoids control how many electrolytes are present.
Example: Aldosterone - Regulates mineral metabolism.
