The two types of PDS are:
(i) Revamped Public Distribution System (RPDS): It was introduced in 1992 in 1,700 blocks in the country to provide the benefits of PDS to remote and backward areas.
(ii) Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS): It was introduced from June 1997 to adopt the principle of targeting the 'poor in all areas'. It was for the first time that a differential price policy was adopted for poor and non-poor.
