Skeletal tissue :

  1. The skeletal tissue is a connective tissue that possesses a solid matrix and the living cells in the fluid-filled spaces called lacunae.
  2. Generally, the skeletal tissues provide support and protection, thereby forming an endoskeleton.
  3. There are two types of skeletal tissues, namely, Bones and Cartilages.

Types of Skeletal tissue -

Bones:

  1. The bones are strong and nonflexible tissues.
  2. The cells are embedded in a hard matrix consisting of a collagenous protein complex called ossein and minerals.
  3. The bones help to anchor muscles and provide shape and skeletal support to the body.

Cartilage:

  1. It is a firm and flexible connective tissue capable of continuous and rapid growth.
  2. The solid matrix has fluid-filled lacunae having one too many living cells called chondrocytes.
  3. Cartilage helps to prevent wear and tear of the bone.
