Solution

Tissue:

Tissue is a group of cells that have similar structure and that function together as a unit.

Animal Tissue

  1. The animal cells are grouped together to form animal tissues.
  2. These tissues vary in their structure, function, and origin.
  3. The animal tissues are divided into epithelial, connective, muscular and nervous tissues.
  4. The different types of animal tissues include:

Epithelial Tissue

Epithelial tissues form the protective covering and inner lining of the body and organs.

Connective Tissue

  1. Connective tissues vary widely in their form and function, but they are all characterized by the presence of extracellular matrix.
  2. The extracellular matrix is nonliving material composed of protein fibers and ground substance.

Muscle Tissue

  1. Muscle tissue is specialized for contraction.
  2. The cells are elongated, and are also known as muscle fibers.
  3. They contain the contractile proteins actin and myosin, which interact to shorten and elongate the cells.

Nervous Tissue

  1. Nervous tissue is specialized for communication and composes the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves.
  2. The tissue consists of specialized cells called neurons or the nerve cells.
  3. Neurons communicate with each other via electrical and chemical signals.
