Gray matter:

  1. The tissue which makes up about 40 % of the central nervous system is called gray matter.
  2. It consists of the cell body and unmyelinated axons and dendrites of neurons.
  3. It is a site where neurons coordinate.

Three Types of cells in the gray matter :

Funicular cells:

  1. These are the cells that act as a receptor.
  2. These cells extend from gray matter to the white matter of the brain.

Radicular cells:

  1. These are efferent cells that extend to the spinal nerves of the brain.

Inner cells:

  1. These cells form associations between neurons.
  2. These cells do not extend out from the gray matter.
