Instructions:
- Explain the 4 patterns
- Dendritic patterns
- Trellis patterns
- Rectangular patterns
- Radial patterns
Solution:
The river stream within a drainage basin forms a certain pattern in which it flows. These patterns are known as river patterns or the patterns of drainage systems.
Dendritic patterns:
In this pattern, the river flows along the slope of the terrain resembling the tree branches. The ganga and the Brahmaputra rivers are examples of dendritic patterns in India.
Trellis patterns:
This pattern is usually made where the hardrock and soft rock exist separately. Here, the tributaries of the river pass through soft rocks and then join the main river always at right angles. The streams flowing from the upper part of himalayan region is an example of a trellis pattern in India.
Rectangular patterns:
These patterns of the river are formed where the rocks are strongly joined. Here, the streams flow in a straight line. And we can see the turns of the river only when the rocks are loosely joined. And hence, we can see a rectangular pattern when the river flows. The Narmada river in India is an example of trellis drainage pattern in India.
Radial patterns:
In this pattern, the river flows from a central peak point or mountain to all directions.
