Electrolytes can be classified as following:
(i) Strong electrolytes: The compounds which undergo complete dissociation ionisation in aqueous solution are known as strong electrolytes.
Strong electrolytes have degree of dissociation near 1.
Example– NaOH
(ii) Weak electrolytes: The compounds which undergo only partial ionisation in aqueous solution are known as weak electrolytes.
Weak electrolytes have degree of dissociation less than 1.
Example- NH4OH
(iii) Non-electrolytes: The compounds that do not ionise at all in solution are known as non-electrolytes. As a result, solutions containing non-electrolytes do not conduct electricity.
