Regeneration: The ability of an organism to regenerate the parts of the body that were lost due to injury.

There are three types of organs and tissues depending on their ability to regenerate :

  1. The tissue and organs such as bones, bone marrow, connective tissues, linings of the alimentary canal, and urinary and respiratory tract can undergo the cellular regeneration.
  2. The tissues and organs such as the kidney, liver, lungs, pancreas, endocrine system, and smooth and skeletal muscles can undergo cellular and intracellular regeneration.
  3. The third type of tissues and organs such as cells of the central nervous system and myocardium tissue of the heart can undergo only intracellular regeneration.
