Solution

Sporangia:

  1. The capsule structure that is found in plants and fungi that stores the reproductive spores in it is known as sporangia.
  2. Sporangia have different structures and shapes depending on the organisms.

Sori:

  1. A group of sporangia containing spores which are produced on upper surface (adaxial) or lower surface (abaxial) of leaves is known as sori.
  2. Sori is found in fungi and ferns.

Classification of sori based on pattern of maturation of sporangia:

There are three types of sori based on pattern of maturation of sporangia: Simple sori, Gradate or basipetal sori and Mixed sori.

Simple sori:

  1. The maturation of spores occurs at the same stage of development.
  2. Simple sori mature and develop at the same stage.
  3. Example: Gleicheniaceae, Marattiaceae.

Gradate or basipetal sori:

  1. The spores are in the middle position with oblique annulus.
  2. The internal spaces in the radial sori overlap and get filled with sporangia.
  3. The spores have basipetal or acropetal arrangement.
  4. Example: Hymenophyllaceae.

Mixed sori:

  1. The sori is present in vertical fashion.
  2. The aggregation of sori in old and young sporangia is mixed and no regular arrangement is observed.
  3. Example: Nephrolepis.
