Lanthanides:

The group 15 elements are reactive and silver-colour elements with atomic numbers from 57 to 71. It is also known as rare earth because the separation is very difficult. They have one valence electron in the 5d shell with an oxidation state +2,+3,and+4.

Uses of Lanthanides:

  1. It is used as a catalyst in the manufacture of petroleum and synthetic products.
  2. Thoria and Ceria are used in lamps, magnets, lasers, motion picture projectors, and X-ray intensify screens.
  3. Alloys of Lanthanides are used in the instrumental steels, stainless steel, and heat resistance.
  4. It is used for the metallothermic reaction.
  5. Ceria salts are used in lead storage batteries.
