The skeleton has five main functions:

  1. Support: The skeletal system provides support and shape to the body.
  2. Movement: The skeleton helps in the movement of the body.
  3. Protection: The skeleton provides protection to the internal organs of the body.
  4. Production of blood cells: The white blood cells and the red blood cells are produced by the yellow bone marrow and red bone marrow respectively.
  5. Storage of minerals: The bones of the skeleton consists of bone cells that are arranged in the form of concentric rings in a ground matrix in which the collagen fibres and mineral salts are stored.
