One of the ways of reducing the possibility of war is by the reduction of armaments. This process of eliminating arms is called disarmament.

In mid-1960s, the superpowers- USA and USSR began to take concrete steps to lessen the danger of a nuclear war.

In 1963, a partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty was signed by USA, Britain, Russia and many other countries. It prohibited the testing of nuclear weapons in the atmosphere, outer space, and under water.

Talks have been going on among superpowers to reduce arms and on limiting the numbers of certain types of missiles. These were known as the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT)
