Communicable diseases can occur and spread in the following ways:

  • Direct method:

Direct contact: Diseases like measles, chicken pox, and fungal infections are spread through direct contact with an infected person.

  • Indirect method: This includes the following ways:
  • Contaminated food and water or drink: Many diseases are transferred by food, water or drink that are contaminated or not washed properly.
  • Droplet infection: Many viral and bacterial diseases of the respiratory tract are transmitted through droplets.
  • Touching and sharing items used by the infected person: The use of same towel, handkerchief, and many more that are used by patient to a healthy person.
  • Vectors: Vectors are those organisms that carry germs from source of infection but themselves do not get infection. For example mosquito, houseflies.
  • Contaminated air and water are the abiotic factors that transfer diseases to healthy person and make them sick.
