Written Sources of history are the source of history available in the textual form. Examples of written sources include Newspapers, Periodicals, Encyclopaedias, Correspondence, Diaries, Government Gazettes, Documents in the Archives, Postage stamps ,and Reference books.

  • Newspapers are considered to be the fourth pillar of democracy in the modern period. It was a prominent medium of information in the period from 1961 to 2000. They carry information about national and international affairs, politics, art, sports, literature and social and cultural affairs and contain matters related to human life.

  • Periodicals, Newsletters and Magazines discuss various topics and movements and keep us updated. They help us to understand the important events of the year. Dailies, weeklies of political parties, monthly and annual magazines come under this.

  • Postage Stamps are also an important written source of history. They reveal a lot to us about changing times through the variety in the size, colour schemes and the novelty in their subjects.Common themes of these stamps include political leaders, flowers, animals, birds, an event, or the silver, golden, diamond jubilees or centenar and bicentenary.
