Question

What is transpiration and its advantages?

Open in App
Solution

Transpiration:

  1. The process of loss of water in the form of vapour from plants is known as transpiration.
  2. The roots consume a certain amount of water from the soil and the rest evaporates into the atmosphere.
  3. Plant parts such as stems, leaves, and small pores of flowers evaporate water into the atmosphere.

Advantages of transpiration:

  1. When the water content in plants is high, the water in form of vapour is exhaled out through stomata that prevent plant cells from bursting.
  2. Transpiration provides a pull to water from roots to all over the plant body.
  3. Transpiration also helps in the exchange of gases as excessive oxygen is exhaled out during photosynthesis and carbon dioxide is inhaled.
  4. It helps to maintain osmotic pressure and cell turgidity.
  5. Transpiration cools down the leaves' temperature by evaporation of water through stomata.
  6. Due to transpiration, humidity levels in the atmosphere are maintained.
  7. Transpiration causes proper distribution and absorption of minerals and water in the plant body.
