Question

what are trhe conditions for the two species to be isostructural?

Solution

They should have same hybridisation with same number of lone pair to have the same structure. For ex.,
Find the hybridisation and lone pair using the following formula.

H = 12 [ Valence e- of the central atom + No of maonvalent atom - cation + anion ]Lone pair = H- No of suurounding atom.

If there is mismatching in the values for any one of the molecules given you can say they are not isostructural.

1. CO32- and NO3-
CO32- : H = 12 [4 + 0 -0 +2]= 6 2 = 3 (sp2)Lone pair = 3-3 = 0NO3- : H = 12 [5 + 0 -0 +1]= 6 2 = 3 (sp2)Lone pair = 3-3 = 0Thus both are isostructural: Trigonal (sp2)2. PCl4+ : H = 12 [5 + 4 -1 +0]= 82 = 4 (sp3)Lone pair= 4-4 = 0SiCl4 : H = 12 [4 + 4 -0 +0]= 8 2 = 4 (sp3)Lone pair = 4-4 = 0Thus both are isostructural: Tetrahedral (sp3)3. PF5 : H = 12 [5 + 5 -0 +0]= 10 2 = 5 (sp3d)Lone pair = 5-5 = 0It has trigonal bipyramidal str.BrF5 : H = 12 [7 + 5 -0 +0]= 12 2 = 6 (sp3d2)Lone pair = 6-5 =1It has distorted octahedral structure4. AlF63- : H = 12 [3 +6 -0 +3]= 12 2 = 6 (sp3d2)Lone pair = 6-6 = 0SF6 : H = 12 [6 + 6 -0 +0]= 12 2 = 6 (sp3d2)Lone pair = 6-6= 0Thus both are isostructural: Octahedral
