Question

What are the two causes of frameshift mutation?

Open in App
Solution

Frameshift mutation:

  1. The mutations that occur due to the addition or deletion of one or two nucleotides in the coding region of a gene are known as frameshift mutations.
  2. It causes a change in the reading frame of codons in mRNA.
  3. This leads to the premature translation of proteins or chain termination.

Causes of frameshift mutation:

1. Insertion:

  1. Insertion of one or two bases in a DNA sequence causes frameshift mutations.
  2. Insertion of bases changes the reading frame due to which faulty proteins are translated.
  3. The severity of this kind of frameshift mutation depends on the wide variety of nucleotides and the location of insertion of nucleotides.
  4. This mutation is stated as (-)1 frameshift mutation.

2. Deletion:

  1. Deletion of one or two bases in a DNA sequence alters the reading frame leading to frameshift mutations.
  2. This mutation is stated as (+)1 frameshift mutation.
