Algae:

  1. Algae are eukaryotic organisms and some algae are Prokaryotic (cyanobacteria).
  2. Most algae are photoautotrophic and carry on photosynthesis i.e. they use sunlight and chlorophyll to make food.
  3. Algae lack roots, stems, and leaves.
  4. Examples: Chlorella, Spirulina, Agar, etc.

Uses of algae:

  1. Algae help in the carbon dioxide fixation on the earth through the process of photosynthesis.
  2. Algae increase the level of dissolved oxygen in their surrounding environment.
  3. Algae are used as thickening agents for food, biodiesel fuels, pollution control, bacterial growth mediums, etc.
  4. Algae are used as fertilizers.
