Types of pure substances: (i) Element (ii) Compound

Element:

  • An element is a pure substance made up of only the same type of particles or atoms.
  • It can not be split into simpler substances by chemical means.
  • For example, IronFe
  • Here, Iron is made up of only Iron atoms.

Compound:

  • A compound is a substance that can be split into simpler and different substances by chemical means.
  • For example, WaterH2O.
  • Here, Water is a compound made with two different substances called HydrogenH and OxygenO.
  • Hence it can be split into these two different substances Hydrogen and oxygen.

Conclusion:

Element and compound are the two types of pure substances.
