In molecular genetics, an untranslated region (or UTR) is referred to as either of the two parts, one on each side of a coding sequence on a strand of mRNA(messenger RNA).
If it is found on the 5' end, it is referred to as 5' UTR (or leader sequence), or if it is found on the 3' side, it is referred to as 3' UTR (or trailer sequence).
The untranslated regions (UTRs) in mRNA play a very important role in regulating the stability, function, and localization of the mRNA.
The 3'-UTRs of mRNA act as a template for miRNA binding that is responsible for regulating the turnover and/or function of the mRNA.
