White blood cells are vital components of the blood. They are impotant part of the body's immune system. They help the body fight infection and other diseases. They are responsible for protecting the body from invasion by foreign substances, such as bacteria and viruses. There are many types of white blood cells such as granulocytes (neutrophils, eosinophils, and basophils), monocytes, and lymphocytes. White blood cells are also called leukocytes or leucocytes and abbreviated as WBCs. They are made in the bone marrow and found in the blood and lymph tissue.
