Bacteria that can survive without oxygen:

  1. The bacteria which grow in the absence of oxygen are called anaerobic bacteria.
  2. Some anaerobic bacteria can die if exposed to oxygen, while some can tolerate oxygen exposure to some extent.

Example of anaerobic bacteria: Escherichia coli:

  1. The rod-shaped, gram-negative bacteria, are found in the intestines of humans and the gut of some animals.
  2. It is a facultative anaerobe (that can grow in the presence and absence of oxygen).
  3. Some strains of this bacteria are responsible for causing food infections and urinary tract infections in humans.
