Manganese toxicity:

  1. Excess of manganese in body induces deficiencies of iron, magnesium & calcium.
  2. Manganese toxicity results in permanent neurological disorder known as manganism.

Symptoms of manganism:

  1. Neurological tremors
  2. Difficulty in walking
  3. Facial muscle spasms.
  4. Irritability, aggressiveness, and even hallucinations.

Treatment of manganism:

  1. The chelation therapy has also been used for the treatment of severe cases of manganese intoxication.
  2. EDTA treatment has been shown to increase the manganese excretion in urine & decrease manganese concentrations in the blood.
  3. Clinical symptoms do not appear to be significantly improved among patients.
