Question

What remains constant in Charles Law?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Charles' law gives the relation between temperature and volume for an ideal gas.
  2. It states that the volume of a gas is directly proportional to its temperature, at constant pressure and fixed mass.
  3. It can be mathematically given as VTVT=constant
  4. This law helped to define a new scale of temperature known as the Kelvin temperature scale, where the kelvin temperature was obtained by adding 273.15 K to the Celsius temperature.
  5. On graphical representation, it gives a straight line, which on extrapolation to zero volume gives a temperature value of -273.15°C.
  6. Thus in Charles' law, the pressure of the gas remains constant as well as the mass remains the same.
